Write your Self Portrait
One of poetry’s super powers is using attention to small details to paint expansive pictures. Layering images and ideas together, poems are a wonderful format for telling big stories in small spaces.
In this writing workshop, we’ll use simple-to-respond-to writing prompts to create snapshots of ourselves. We’ll play with a variety of poetic forms, to create distinct and layered portraits of ourselves, our stories, and our lives. We’ll look to poetry from Diane Seuss, Ada Limon, John Lee Clark, Mary Oliver and others to inspire our own writing. You’ll create a new self-portrait of yourself through poetry – a way to see yourself and your stories in a new light.
This is a generative writing workshop, meant to spur new writing – first drafts and sketches. No experience necessary.
Tuesday, May 27, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.
At OffCenter Community Arts Project, 808 Park Ave SW, ABQ.
Tiered pricing: Free $0 / Base $10 / Core $20 / Supporter $40

Teacher bio: Mika Maloney is a writer and artist based in Albuquerque, NM. She has written two chapbooks of poetry, ripscape (2007) and Spring Break (2019), and hosted Small Batch Poetry on TPG Radio (2022). She currently teaches writing workshops at OffCenter Community Arts Project, where she also works as the executive director. Mika’s playful art practice crosses a variety of mediums, including painting and fiber art. She finds inspiration in the rich histories of quilting, design, and decorative arts that have brought beauty to utilitarian objects throughout human history. Her current writing project is a prose poem hybrid experiment exploring themes of home, money, home buying, home making, debt, marriage, partnership, and community; drawing from historical lending practices, the current housing crisis, and pretty much every movie Julia Roberts has been in.
All materials provided. No experience necessary.
Unless otherwise specified ages 16+ are welcome to attend OffCenter classes independently. Students age 12 to 15 must be accompanied by an adult (18+) who stays with them for the duration of the class. We highly recommend that the accompanying adult register and participate in the class as well. Individual classes may have additional age or experience requirements. This class is for ages 16 and up.
Why are there multiple prices? Our classes are offered at a sliding scale, with a free option available to anyone that requests it. When possible, we make the base option available in order to partly cover the cost of the class. The core price is the "true" cost of the class OffCenter needs to cover paying our teachers and providing supplies and materials. If you are able to support at a higher level, paying the supporter price helps ensure we're able to continue offering a variety of classes and keep free spaces open for anyone that needs.
There are a limited number of spots at each price level available online. If you want to sign up at a level that is sold out, please email, call, or drop by the studio to sign up! Email info@offcenterarts.org.
