Poetry of the Personal & Political: Drafting Process - April
This class will cover the basics of poetry with a lens of sharing personal experiences within a larger political and socioeconomic ecosystem. How the intimate details of our lives can often be political in the way they impact our place in the world. No political agenda will be pushed in any way; this is an opportunity to explore your own place in the world and how poetry can help you understand/cope with that place. The general theme of the sessions will be learning how to write poetry and hone your existing practice. It will offer opportunities for beginner and intermediate students alike to learn new skills and be in a room of fellow writers.
Over the course of the three sessions students will learn about the basic form and techniques of poetry. Each session is an independent class; participants can register for one, two or all three. Each session will include a poetry packet with examples and writing prompts. Sessions will include time for sharing writing with the group. For ages 16 and up.
In this third session, we will cover the drafting process (we will learn how to employ tools like syntax and sound work to take an existing draft and elevate it).

Unless otherwise specified ages 16+ are welcome to attend OffCenter classes independently. Students age 12 to 15 must be accompanied by an adult (18+) who stays with them for the duration of the class. Teacher bio: Rex Morton is a non-binary Poet who graduated with their MFA in poetry from the University of South Florida in 2021. During their three years at USF they independently taught university level courses in poetry, English composition, and professional and technical writing. They also taught summer workshops to high school and middle schools students in poetry. They served as design and poetry editor on the literary magazine Saw Palm and book review editor for Sweet: A Literary Confection before moving to Albuquerque. They have publications in Sweet: A Literary Confection (book reviews), GASHER (poetry), Crab Creek Review (poetry), FlyPaper (poetry), Hobart (fiction) and more. She currently serves as the internal communications program officer for a national non-profit.

No experience required. Ages 16 and up.
Why are there multiple prices? All of our classes are offered at a sliding scale, with a free option available to anyone that requests it. When possible, we make the base option available in order to partly cover the cost of the class. The core price is the "true" cost of the class OffCenter needs to cover paying our teachers and providing supplies and materials. If you are able to support at a higher level, paying the supporter price helps ensure we're able to continue offering a variety of classes and keep free spaces open for anyone that needs.
